Mindset

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. We participated in the 2023 Tap Cancer Out Winter Haven BJJ Open competition, this Saturday. The whole time leading up to it I felt God speaking to me about my mindset. Many practitioners focus on building their bodies and confidence, but often underestimate the importance of their state of mind. I know I did. I will explore the contrasting experiences of two moments in my practice of BJJ, where I learned the hard way about the pivotal role my state of mind plays not just in competition but in life.

The First Competition: A Mindset Defeat

During the time leading up to my first competition in BJJ, like many newcomers to BJJ, initially I approached the sport with enthusiasm and dedication. As best I could anyway. I spent hours in my garage working out, honing my physical skills, and worked diligently to boost my self-confidence through prayer and getting to class as often as I could. However, on the day of my first competition, I encountered a taller and seemingly more skilled opponent. The result? A state of mind riddled with doubt and intimidation. The moment I saw him, I was already thinking of the match being a challenge.

I had diligently prepared my body but failed to prepare my mind adequately. Not to mention I was still very inconsistent with my BJJ practice. Once I saw my opponent to be a taller person and a two striped white belt, the negative self-talk and feelings of inadequacy took center stage, ultimately contributing to my defeat. It was a stark lesson in how a compromised state of mind can undermine even the most physically prepared.

The Turning Point: A Shift in State of Mind

Fast forward nearly a year, and I have undergone a profound transformation. I had spent countless hours on the mat, refining my technique and bolstering my skills. I committed to a weekly routine that gets me on the mat 3-5 times a week depending on work. However, what truly changed the game was an unexpected challenge from my Professor: My professor told me, "I need you to tap this guy as much as you can..." That was all I needed to know. It was crazy, I didn't take the time to think about anything else. I didn't how good he was, how strong he was, just that professor trusted me enough to tell me to do it.

This challenge became a defining moment. I was once the student who had been overwhelmed by doubt, who then tapped into a newfound state of mind. Focused solely on the objective, I approached the roll with a determination to tap my opponent repeatedly. What followed was a remarkable display of mental resilience and unwavering focus as I tapped my opponent five times in a single round. I was as ready as I was going to be for the competition.

The Realization: The Power of a Focused State of Mind

It was during the reflection that night that I came to a profound realization: my mindset had been the critical factor in my success on the mat that night. In my first competition, I had allowed doubt and intimidation to control my thoughts, leading to my defeat. However, during the challenge set by my professor, I had harnessed the power of a focused state of mind, enabling me to achieve a remarkable victory on the mat and in my own mind. I brought this to the competition. Though I took silver, I was more aware going into the first match and I won. The second match I was more fatigued and a little intimidated by the fact I even made it to round two.

Conclusion: Mastering Your State of Mind in BJJ

The contrast between these two experiences underscores the paramount importance of one's state of mind in BJJ training and competition. Physical preparation is undoubtedly vital, but without a strong and focused mindset, even the most skilled athletes can falter.

The journey from a defeat driven by insecurity to a resounding victory founded on a determined mindset exemplifies the transformative power of mastering one's state of mind in BJJ. As BJJ practitioners, we must recognize that our state of mind can be the ultimate game-changer, allowing us to overcome challenges, conquer self-doubt, and reach new heights in our journey through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Remember, the battle within is just as crucial as the one on the mat.
